Day 21 September 13

Day 21, September 13, 2012 Zell to Koblenz, 57 miles, total mileage: 643.2

We left Zell ready to finish our trip along the Mosel River.  The skies were overcast with a few light showers and it was cool.  The less than perfect weather was made up by the constant passing of trains on our left.
Eventually we crossed to the west bank of the river and continued north.  We were near the river most of the day and we passed through small village after another.  Wine Festivals were being featured most fall weekends in the various towns.  We were now in the land of Riesling instead of moselle wine. And when you order Riesling here, they ask is you want dry or sweet.
The perfect lunch on the trail!
As you can see, there is not much room for a "private" bike path so it is partitioned from the main road.  It is a two way bike path.  The train got the higher thoroughfare and then the grapes growing in the shale rich soil which absorbs the sun and warms the vines (I read that!).
As we approached Koblenz, the east side of the river began to have more forest and less vineyards.  It was a welcome change in the scenery.
One last break before crossing the Mosel River for the last time.  Into Koblenz and some city riding.  Always an adventure.

  1. Killer railway shot! Such a beautiful region of Deutschland; studying German in HS, I always wondered what this country looked like 'up close & personal'....
Thanks so much for the views!!
