Day 1, August 24, 2012 Lots of miles but none on the bike
Here is the very first sunrise of this extravaganza. The flight was uneventful which is the best kind. After leaving Schiphol, we took the train to Amsterdam's Central Station and suddenly we became tourists instead of merely travelers.
After making our way to the hotel, we left our "luggage" and found a spot for lunch. While lunch was unremarkable, although an adventure since we did not understand the menu, the beer was perfect at the sidewalk cafe.
Amsterdam is a city of canals and when you spend hours walking around looking at the the sights, you cross one canal after another-sometimes the same one multiple times and places!
This collection of tourist style wooden shoes reminded us of the pairs that Uncle Thomas brought back when our kids had tiny feet. There's no room on the tandem so there will be no wooden shoes, just a picture.
It's been a long day and we are weary travelers, but the first day was great. Tomorrow we are off to the boat and our coverage may be spotty. We will write when we can.
Looks like the fun is beginning. Have a great time.
ReplyDeleteI finally found the site. I'm so jealous. I could have been your translator in Holland. maria
ReplyDeleteGlad you arrived safely! Great 1st day pictures. Looking forward to more of your great adventure.
ReplyDeleteYour wonderful commentary and photos are a great supplement for those of us not quite as adventurous :) !
ReplyDeleteJust brought Jane coffee and croissants for breakfast. Now its time to put the bike together and find the barge. Thanks for all your comments, we love hearing from you . We will try to stay in touch.
ReplyDeleteBike... barge... Are you pulling a barge behind the tandem?! ;-)
